A defensive vehicle powered by a rocket engine control system from Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne was successfully tested when it neutralized a target in a situation that simulated a hostile, in-bound missile. This is the seventh successful test of its kind, making it a key element in the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). Here's more from the press release.
A primary requirement of the system is near-instant response, which was proven again in dramatic fashion. Similar to a successful test that was conducted in April of this year, today's intercept once again demonstrated THAAD's performance and verified the DACS design in a demanding flight scenario. This test was conducted in the endo-atmospheric regime, confirming the system's performance at higher altitudes.
