Nokia Opens Up Symbian The Cost of Influence is $410M

Nokia Opens Up Symbian – The Cost of Influence

Nokia already had a large stake in Symbian, the entity that produces the operating system (OS) for its phones. Now, the company bought the rest of the shares for $410M and announced that phone makers would not have to pay to use the Symbian OS anymore. By doing this, Nokia hopes to boost the market share of the Symbian OS. Just like Google with its Android mobile platform, Nokia is trying to gain mindshare and influence in a world where software is more and more where the value is, because it defines the user experience more than the hardware. As an example, just compare the Samsung OMNIA and the iPhone 3G, similar specifications, but very different user experience.

Also, Nokia has invested a lot of efforts in developing applications for Symbian OS, and wants to make sure that its investment stays relevant as the company goes from phone maker to platform and content provider and distributor. When you control the platform, you can (try to) shape the industry to your own image (for a time, at least)… ask Microsoft, they would know something about it.

Antro Solo Goes Far On A Gallon

Antro Solo Goes Far On A Gallon

How does 150 miles-per-gallon sound to you? Sweet, right? The Antro Solo from Hungary breaks new ground with a 150 miles-per-gallon mileage, as it thrives on being a gas-electric hybrid. This is a three seater vehicle, and passenger seats are equipped with pedals for them to generate juice for the electric motor during the ride. Great to keep kids occupied during long road trips, making sure they are dog-tired after that to provide mom and dad some much needed peace. Solar panels located on the roof ensure you can go up to 25 miles without consuming a single drop of fuel. The Antro Solo is constructed solely from carbon fiber, which means it weighs a featherlight 270kg. I wonder how that will translate onto on-the-road physics as larger vehicles zoom pass it. With a top speed of 87mph, this is one bangin' hybrid car to own. When will the real deal actually roll out?

Genius SP-T1200 Speakers

Genius SP-T1200 Speakers

Guess everything is going touch screen these days - Genius' latest SP-T1200 speakers feature a touch screen panel that lets you control various functions including volume, bass and treble at the touch of a finger. Gotta love the adjustable light that functions as a slide bar, illuminating itself each time adjustments are made. You get 30-watt of sound, which is suitable for your own consumption but definitely not enough to bring the house down. The Genius SP-T1200 will retail for $99 and comes in black-onyx color. Chances are this will be a fingerprint magnet, so be prepared to clean it oh-so-often.

Laser Surveillance Defeater

Laser Surveillance Defeater

What you see here looks like some sort of amateur job, but the Laser Surveillance Defeater is more than meets the eye. It is a portable device that is small enough to fit just about anywhere, allowing you to sabotage any attempts at eavesdropping on your conversation. All you need to do is place it on a window and it will jam various frequencies to distort the actual conversation taking place within the vicinity of the Laser Surveillance Defeater. It sells for less than $70 a pop.

Motorola Goes For Broke

Motorola Goes For Broke

Word on the street has it that Motorola is going for broke with their newest flagship cell phone, and this could very well be their "last stand" too. It seems that internally, most folks hope that this will be the handset that gets Motorola out of the doldrums, or the handset business will just fold if it is a failure. So far the specifcations of this are rumored to include :-

  • 8 megapixel camera
  • Integrated NVIDIA chip
  • GPS navigation
  • Touch screen navigation
  • UIQ operating System
It looks set for an October release, but that could change anytime though. I guess nobody ever thought that Motorola's cell phone business could close down, but stranger things have happened in the past I suppose.

Palm Centro Unlocked

Palm Centro Unlocked

Palm will be offering an unlocked Centro, so you don't have to be shackled down by Sprint, AT&T and Verizon if you want to pick up this phenomenal seller. This carrier-independent version will feature quad-band GSM support (850/900/1800/900 Mhz), but you'll miss out on 3G connectivity though. It will share just about the same specifications as the AT&T version, but will see a gray number pad replace the green version with a slightly higher price point of $299.

ReadyBot Impresses

ReadyBot Impresses

The hobbyist-built ReadyBot cleaning robot is definitely a plus to have in any home, since it not only scrubs your entire floor spic and span, it is also able to pick up your child's toys after them so that no adult will trip over a wayward toy car and end up at the emergency ward. Of course, it is bad form to expect a robot to pick up after our own stuff, but I suppose there are times when the kid's mind just isn't in the right place that exceptions can be made. If only the ReadyBot was constructed larger so that it can double up as a ride for your toddlers.

EleeNo Cyber Watch

EleeNo Cyber Watch

Go nuts with the EleeNo Cyber watch - it will take a degree of sorts to be able to tell the time. I don't really get the idea behind such timepieces which require a fair bit of training before you can tell the time at a glance, since watches are meant to convey that information quickly. Still, those who want something a little bit more stylish than traditional analog/digital watches can always settle for the EleeNo Cyber watch. You get an extremely long face, small circular portals in red or green which add up to show the current time and a metallic finish (dark or light, that's your choice).

Hydrogen Storage Hits New Heights

Hydrogen Storage Hits New Heights

The problem of hydrogen storage has apparently been solved thanks to ammonia borane - a powder which is more hydrogen-dense than liquid hydrogen itself. This stable white powder will release hydrogen gas upon heating. Currently, research is being done to store hydrogen safely so that it will be released at will to keep a fuel cell going. Hopefully their efforts will scale up to cater for various industries around the world, helping us drop the unusually high dependency on oil.

Regional WiMAX Services to Kick Off

Regional WiMAX Services to Kick Off

"Regional WiMAX" services has been shown to visitors at the "Japan Cable TV & Telecommunications Show 2008" last week, relying on the 10MHz in the 2.5GHz band. This service is tipped to kick off early this October assuming the planets are aligned properly. It is interesting to note that despite frequency bands allotted to WiMAX services differ in Korea and Japan, the former's terminal do operate well enough within the latter's 2.5GHz band.
