The HAWK crosswalk button actually has the well-being of pedestrians in mind, as it changes the traffic light to red whenever you press it unlike current ones that take an impossibly long time to change the signal. The HAWK system is currently being used in Arizona, with pedestrians wielding enough traffic-stopping power in the tips of their fingers - of course, we're assuming the pedestrians who use this are considerate of drivers as well. Can you imagine a traffic light that turns red once every five seconds? Perhaps this is a secret ploy to get folks to ditch their cars in order to cut down on greenhouse emissions.
