The lack of any IR support for the PS3 is certainly disheartening as you can't program your universal remote to work with it, which is why disgruntled gamer Mike Muecke has come up with the USBIRXR3 USB IR dongle. This dongle takes advantage of the PS2's IR codes and works right out of the box with virtually any universal remote. While it solves a major headache, it does have drawbacks like the $30 price which is certainly more expensive than Nyko's made-in-China remote/dongle combo that is extremely cheap. Also, the 'Subtitle' and 'Audio' type buttons don't seem to be supported via USB. In addition, you'll have to turn the PS3 off and on manually since Sony's firmware doesn't allow power to transmit to the USB ports. Kudos to Mike for his effort!
