Nokia is working with some of its competitors and chipmakers to produce a universal flash memory unit for cellphones. Currently known as Universal Flash Storage (UFS), it is meant to do away with numerous memory card readers and translation devices that are dime a dozen these days. The final product would boast very low memory access times, lower power consumption, and increase data retrieval speeds not found on current flash storage products. It is Nokia's dream to reduce access times for a 90-minute HD movie to a few seconds, compared to three minutes currently. 2009 is the earliest consumers will be able to see UFS at retail store shelves. Hopefully UFS will do away with the 18 memory card formats (according to Wikipedia) at the moment. Will Sony Ericsson oppose to this idea since they're famous for propietary formats?
