STMicroelectronics is doing its part to reduce the number of battery chargers discarded with portable devices by rolling out a smaller and improved circuit-protection device that can be used safely in universal chargers. Known as the ESDA8V2-1MX2, it boasts a 55% smaller footprint with its dimensions of 1.0mm x 1.45mm, offering designers more room to implement additional functions or to further miniaturize existing creations. The protection device is also thinner at 0.55mm, shaving off 0.15mm compared to a typical alternative device. That's not all though, as reduction in leakage current has dropped to 50% of the original, helping reduce battery drain for improved performance as well as longer recharge intervals. Let's hope many device manufacturers will pick this up for a greener future.
