The IEEE 1394 Trade Association has revealed that future iterations of FireWire will be four times as fast as today's speediest version - hitting peaks of 3.2Gbps, which roughly translates to 400MB/s! This is made possible without taxing the processor unlike USB, and is capable of operating near its peak as long as the source can keep up with it. In addition, more power can be supplied via FireWire compared to USB or external SATA, allowing you to transmit data in a flash even at distances of up to a hundred meters and above. Dubbed the S3200, it will be primarily used for fast storage such as multi-disk external hard drives as well as consumer electronics.
