Samsung just released a new 1.2 Megapixel sensor that is small enough to be integrated in a laptop's display bezel. It can obviously be used in larger USB models. The need is real: integrated webcams tend to be crappy and we would sure love to see something much better in there. Samsung claims to have found a way to squeeze more information from the little amount of light that goes through the tiny lens. This embedded system can record 720p videos at 30fps and VGA videos at 60fps.
Of course, beyond the specs, we need to see real images produced by this sensor. I'm sure that it will be better than what we have today, but I doubt that it would be better than low-end or mid-range compact camera. The Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 (our review) had surprised us in the past, though.
