Qisda of Taiwan has unveiled a new smartphone that not only supports IEEE802.16e mobile WiMAX and wireless LAN, it also boasts support for GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks as well. This handset has apparently seen action in the "M-Taiwan" project where the Taiwanese government promotes the WiMAX industry. It will be powered by Microsoft Windows 6.1 as the operating system of choice, featuring support for WiMAX via SIP and VoIP networks in addition to voice calls through wireless LAN. Currently, the handset will be able to handle effective WiMAX speeds of approximately 2Mbps, but it can be tuned to hit even 10Mbps in the future.
