Biomedical engineers from the University of Southern California are currently working a design for a bionic eye that could one day restore sight to the blind. Not only that, this team has also filed for a patent, where a video camera will be implanted directly into the eye as a prosthesis to assist with vision problems. This camera that has been implanted at within the lens of the eye, taking into account the effect of the cornea has on incoming light, will then record images and send them over a wire to a chip located at the back of the eye which subsequently passes the image signals to nerve cells. With all these bionic improvements available, would we arrive at a future where folks are willing to trade in their perfectly fine natural body parts for something bionic?
